I started out with a bunch of doubt
To write what I learned about the word burnt
It came to mind the time my sister died
Cremated remains; I am no longer in pain
I saw her it seems; she came in a dream
Then yesterday morning; just after five
In the room below; singing soft and low
A memory came; a time of fear
Flames jumped out; a different year
Our burning barrel onto dry grass
My dad used suit jacket
Ended flames travelling like gas.
Another time all neighbours combined
To fight fire in the neighbouring field
It brought my tears; wailing began
Their tired blackened faces; boys and man
Celebrating – all races were like clan
Worked as one for common man.
